Ready & waiting • This cinema space in a Perth home waited a decade and a half before being filled with a reference-level system… including vinyl.

THE AUDIO CHAIN

Wallflower • Ultra-short-throw projectors sit up close to your wall to fill a big screen. Xgimi's Aura does so with bright 4K visuals, solid sound, and a price which helped it win an EISA Award.

What does the Zidoo do? • It's a 4K media player with Dolby Vision 12-bit HDR. It's a digital audio player, a network player, a DAC, and a headphone amplifier. Let's take this one step at a time…

JUST ADD SPEAKERS! SMART AMPLIFIERS • A single box that streams music then operates as DAC and amplifier, so that the speakers are the only thing you need to add for a complete system. Simple, yes?

Bluesound Powernode • A relatively small box with big abilities in the streaming and multiroom space.

Denon PMA-900HNE • The first Denon hi-fi amp to get HEOS streaming. And not the last, we suspect.

NAD C 700 • A big smart display, loads of streaming options thanks to the inclusion of BluOS, and of course the power for which NAD has been renowned for decades.

Arcam SA30 • Arcam's amplifier looks old-school, but it combines music streaming with traditional connections, as well as Arcam's powerful Class-G amplification.

Marantz Model 40n • Traditional Marantz amplification with HEOS streaming. What's not to like?

Cambridge Evo 150 • Reinventing the smart amp more than most, Cambridge's Evo 150 is a winner.

Electrocompaniet ECI 6 Mkll • Showing that smart integration can be a boon even on higher-end amps.

Luxury made simple • Luxurious wireless noise-cancellers get a major revision to bring them back among the market leaders.

Gold Spot • Classic Aussie mic maker turns to the ears

The man who removed the hyphen from aptx • After last issue's editorial rant on Bluetooth and the new LC3 codec coming with Bluetooth 5.2, we were contacted by one Jonny McClintock, formerly of Qualcomm, where he was one of the key drivers of the successful third-party Bluetooth aptX codecs. Indeed his involvement with aptX goes back far beyond the involvement of Qualcomm, and in a moment of jest we asked whether he had been responsible for the removal of the hyphen from what was formerly apt-X, thereby sowing momentary confusion among tech journalists who pride themselves on accuracy. — Yes!, he said, that was indeed he. We decided Mr McClintock would be an interesting subject to quiz on things personal, professional and points in-between, so please let us introduce:

Meet three new technologies aiming to disrupt things in the codec and headphone market…

A new Connection • A massive refurbishment of...
