New Bluetooth, same old shite • The Editor is excited then deflated by a new wireless codec.

EISA Awards 2022/2023 • For 40 years, EISA’s Awards have delivered the combined judgement of magazine editors around the world, a global perspective on the best-value and highest-performing consumer electronics you can buy. Sound+Image placed its votes; here are the winners…

KICKING BIGSCREEN GOALS! • Sport, movies, TV drama binges — they all come to life like never before on a big projection screen. But what solution is right for you?

BenQ GS50 • Projection made portable, with battery power, a smart Android TV interface, and built-in speakers. It even looks cute.

Philips PicoPix MaxTV • Our second portable projector is similar, but slightly smaller, and with key operational differences.

Moving the goalposts • It’s an ultra-short-throw laser projector, but loaded with sufficient TV-like functions for Hisense to call it a ‘Laser TV’ — and it comes with a 120-inch screen. We enjoy a brief hands-on session.

SPECTACULAR SOUNDBARS • The four soundbars reviewed this issue are diverse. Devialet’s Dione is a high flyer, out to challenge Sennheiser’s Ambeo at the top of the market. Bowers & Wilkins’ bar is premium, yet not as pricey as you might expect, while the Polk and Sonos bars are less expensive, but aim for sensational results… with one succeeding more than the other.

Solo performer • No subwoofer is required with the Panorama 3, which aims to cover all your movie and music requirements from a soundbar alone. It’s subtle in looks, less so in performance.

Dione: the Diva

A brief Devialet dictionary

Little & large • This lower-level bar earns its place in our collection of sensational soundbars by straightforward impressive performance at the price, especially given such a small unit sitting under your TV.

Light Ray • Can a Sonos soundbar ‘lite’ deliver enough to join our ranks of sensational soundbars?

Wish fulfilment • It’s third time very lucky for the owners of this home cinema in Victoria, created in large part through the power of teamwork.

Elicit pleasures • The UK’s Rega presents something you can plug your turntable into.

Nothing to add • You can choose from five versions of KEF’s updated LSX II wireless active speakers. Whichever you select, they might fulfil your entire hi-fi needs.

Aussie gold • Meet the most enjoyable standmounts we’ve heard in yonks. Equally pleasing, they’re home-grown, in Perth, WA.

Meet ‘Wormy’ – Purifi’s secret weapon

Sigourney Weaver • In a decade where the big screen was dominated by male excess and machismo, one actress emerged who was able to go eyeball to eyeball…

Harrison Ford • The forthcoming fifth and final Indiana Jones movie brings Harrison Ford back into the spotlight an impressive 40 years after he tipped his hat at becoming perhaps the ultimate 1980s’ movie icon.

River Phoenix • He was arguably the greatest actor of his generation, an ’80s heartthrob, eco-warrior, strict vegan, drug addict. And he was dead at 23…

CLASSIC TRACK: Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run
