Grades 3-5 The Momentous Materials series (8 titles) draws attention to some of the ubiquitous materials we use on a daily basis in our homes, on our modes of transportation, and out and about in our communities but probably never even consider. Each installment opens with a brief action scene, such as a crane lifting sheets of metal that will become a bridge, to establish interest and show how the material relates to everyday life. Successive chapters, written in straightforward, accessible text, introduce the history of the material, modern production methods, and how the material is used today. Plastic emphasizes myriad environmental problems associated with this convenient material and why human consumption is so hard to change. All of the titles feature color photos of the production process and address problems with recycling the material and the impact this has on the planet. A concluding quiz reinforces comprehension in this series that encompasses multiple STEM fields.
