The story tells a generations-long tale of the famous Northern Song Dynasty Yang Ye family resisting the invasion of Liao (Khitan) and Xixia . The book describes the touching deeds of the Yang family who have defended the country bravely from generation to generation, showing the loyal struggle between patriotism and traitorousness. There are many characters in the book with different personalities. Yang Liulang is wise and brave, Kou Tianguan is good at making judgments, Meng Liang is rough but fine, Jiao Zan is the first to save his friends, and Wang Qiang smiles and hides the knife. In the book, Kou Zhun of Zhong and Yang Yanzhao of Wu cooperate with each other. Ren Bing dies on behalf of his friend, and Liu Lang lives under a false name. The plot is touching and authentic. The conflicts between Yang Liulang and Pan Renmei and Wang Qiang are sharp. Yang Xing, a comedic character who claims to be "Yang Jiulang", has a humble background and admires Zhongliang. He is naive, humorous and endearing throughout the book. "Trial of Panhong", "Black Pine Forest", "Yunnan Distribution", "Yak Array" and so on, are closely linked and very exciting.
