Mammas, don't let your cowboys grow up to be...singers.

Five years ago, I was an oilfield roughneck with little to show for myself besides my voice. I never thought my songs would land me in the spotlight, working with country music legend Krystal King, but now that I'm here, I'm determined to make it all the way to the top. If only Krystal's haunting eyes weren't so distracting...

Krystal grew up on stage, and the more time I spend with her, the less I see the appeal of her "golden life." She's got secrets, and soon, I'm fostering a wild addiction to her, and letting go of my own dreams to help her heal. But getting her to risk her battered heart may not be possible, and the path to redemption looks like it's going to be even harder than the path to glory.

With this sizzling contemporary romance, Summers (Christmas Flowers) launches a series that will appeal to lovers of country music and cowboys. Identical twins Krystal and Emmy Lou King are parts of a legendary country music family. Where Emmy Lou is gentle and sweet, Krystal revels in her “bad” twin reputation. But Krystal’s rebelliousness hides a vulnerable spirit stemming from a dark family secret. When roughneck aspiring country star Jace Black joins the Kings’ tour as their opening act, sparks fly between him and Krystal. Krystal won’t let herself trust that too-good-to-be-true Jace is really interested, leaving Jace determined to show her that he is different from the men who’ve hurt her in the past. Though the chip on Krystal’s shoulder makes her initially off-putting, her character development is well-paced and believable. Earnest Jace is sure to make readers swoon, and the relationship that develops between him and Kyrstal is sexy and meaningful. The combination of romantic and familial drama in this behind-the-scenes glimpse into the country music world is sure to have readers coming back for more. Daughter of a country legend and part of a performing sibling trio, Krystal King is a bona fide star. Until recently, Jace Black was working in the oilfields. Thrust into the spotlight when competing on a music reality show, Jace gets to perform a duet with Krystal. She is passionate about the new song she wrote, but she's not so sure about the man who will be singing with her. She has trust issues with men after being hurt too many times. But as she rehearses with Jace, she realizes he's the true deal, a real gentleman. Steamy chemistry between Krystal and Jace and fun banter among siblings lighten and brighten Summers' story that also mindfully confronts serious issues of grief, loss, and sexual abuse. Some plot discrepancies arise, and Jace could be more deeply portrayed, but contemporary romance fans will definitely enjoy Summers' fast-paced, engrossing tale and will be glad that it's the first in a series about the enchanting King family.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)

Jace Black is a former oilfield worker who became a celebrity after winning a singing competition. He gets thrown into the spotlight as he works on a duet with country superstar Krystal King. Krystal has her guard up and is reluctant to let Jace in, but they quickly begin to catch feelings for each other while on tour together. Krystal has her demons and so does Jace, and together the two will have to try to work them out if they have any chance to be together. Readers should be aware of some quite tragic subject matter that arises and be willing to power through to get the happily ever after. VERDICT This new slant on the Western romance will be adored by country music cowboy romance fans. Recommend to readers of Linda Lael Miller and Jodi Thomas.--Jacqueline Rammer, Lakeview Community Lib., Random Lake, WI
