就中国传统之发展而言，清民之际乃是最重要的转型时代。这里的"民"不仅指狭义上的中华民国（北洋时代与南京时代又不同），也还包括了日后的中华人民共和国。因为，帝制崩溃乃是一大转折，由此所开辟者非仅一朝一代之"更名换姓"，更具备我文明中国之步入现代世界的标志性意义。毛泽东曾有意援用中华民国之名号，充分体现出其作为历史过程自觉者的伟人意识。不过"民"之一字却始终未易，也可见出"清民易代"的长效性。
