该书探讨的重点是人类进化的问题，但作者所谈的并非生理功能层面的进化，而是心理，乃至意识层面的进化。其实书中所谈及的内容在实质上与各类正宗的修行体系并无本质上的区别，只不过所用的语言是"现代的"和"科学的"，更加容易被接受过现代教育的人所理解。其实很多的体系都是一种向内看，去研究内在的心理学，它们实修的方法也都是一种心理层面的训练。尽管我们只有一个身体，但是基于时代、地域和文化背景的差异，每个体系所用的专门语言，即进行自我观察时独有的标识系统和自我发展的路线图都是不同的。（This book emphasis on the problem of human evolution.
