《尚书》约成书于3000年前的战国时期，是中国最古老的皇室文集，是中国第一部上古历史文件和部分追述古代事迹著作的汇编，它保存了商周特别是西周初期的一些重要史料，基本内容是古代帝王的文告和军臣谈话记录。最早时它被称为《书》，到了汉代被叫做《尚书》，意思是"上古之书"。汉代以后，《尚书》成为儒家的重要经典之一，所以又叫做《书经》。
