《西湖游览志》虽以游览为名，多纪湖山之胜，实则关于宋史者为多。南宋高宗而后，偏安逸豫，每一篇之中三致意焉。宋乾道间，周淙撰《临安志》十五卷。咸淳间，潜说友又续成一百卷。湖山特其中之一目，例不当详。吴自牧作《梦粱录》，周密作《武林旧事》，于岁时、风俗特详，而山川、古迹又在所略。唯成此书，因名胜而附以事迹，鸿纤巨细，一一兼赅。非唯可广见闻，并可以考文献。其体在地志、杂史之间，与明人游记徒以觞咏登临、流连光景者不侔。
