赵构出生于大观元年（1107年）阴历五月二十一日。按宋朝的制度，皇帝诞辰称圣节或诞圣节，后来此日定为天申节。他作为天水朝太宗系的第七代，于宣和三年（1122年）封康王。翌年，赵构十六岁，"始冠"，按古代习俗举行冠礼，赐字德基，"出阁"，"就外第"，离开皇宫，在康王藩邸另住。
