The founder of the successful Jenny Craig Weight-Loss Centers outlines the weight management system she developed to help clients lose weight, keep it off, and live a healthy, comfortable lifestyle. This safe, sensible program uses food exchanges instead of calories and emphasizes good nutrition, moderate exercise, and behavior modification. In addition, it is easily personalized to fit different weight-loss needs and includes numerous recipes and snack suggestions. Unfortunately, for librarians, though, the book is designed with many fill-ins to involve its readers in a variety of exercises that require them to answer questionnaires, write their thoughts, record their goals and progress, outline their strategies, etc. Although this format is undoubtedly helpful to the reader, it limits the book's shelf life in most libraries.-- Linda Chopra, Cleveland Hts.-University Hts. Popular weight-loss guru Craig presents solid weight-management principles in an excellent guide prescribing a workable program of nutritious foods and regular exercise. The lucid text includes specific information on the weight-loss program, but the bulk of it contains specific guidelines based on goal setting, rewards for achievements, and simple behavior-modification techniques. Craig includes plenty of suggestions for handling stress, binge eating, and social activities where food is a temptation. Although many of these--eat meals off of small plates, avoid grocery shopping when hungry, telephone a friend when the urge hits to binge on ice cream--are probably well known to chronic dieters, they are helpfully offered in an upbeat, supportive tone. A top-notch manual that never pushes Craig's weight-loss-center chain or requires readers to buy Jenny's Cuisine--although it does include recipes and sample menus.
