The author believes that this grand novel is a metaphorical history, which is deformed and abnormal due to the cruel literary inquisition. In the novel, "truth is covered while falsehood is dominant". "Nobody knows the names of the numerous dead people, whose bones are piled up like hills. They were no more than ordinary men and women." Historical clues are complicatedly and deep veiled under all plots, chapter names, poetry, drinking games and slangs: imperial secrets, storm of jealousy, insider dealing and brutality of wars. It is mirrored of various aspects of the society at the change of the declining Ming and thriving Qing regimes. This book compares the novel plots with historical facts and comes to a conclusion that the novel is a mirror of the history of early Qing Dynasty: the novel characters of JIA Baoyu, LIN Daiyu and WANG Xifeng are portrayed respectively based on real historical figures of Shunzhi Emperor, Consort Donggo and Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang. ）
