《秋声紫苑》为系列长篇小说《乾隆皇帝》的压轴之作。乾隆末年，盛世难继。以和坤为代表的蠹吏鲸吞国财，毒杀能员，朝野上下腐败不堪。邪教趁机煽惑人心，民怨沸腾，变乱蜂起。乾隆不得不屡屡用兵，派名将福康安四处弹压：殄灭山东平邑暴动，平定大小金川，又挥师台湾，艰难竭蹶敉平林爽文之乱。派兆惠、海兰察倾尽全力平叛西疆。同时年过六旬的乾隆一边费尽心血遴选后继，承嗣大统，让皇十五子项琰历练山东，帮办军机，以求政权顺利交接；一边雄心未已，惩腐倡廉，力图在文治上仪表后世。但因他年事已高，天听失聪，为谀臣佞吏所蒙蔽，致使阿桂、纪昀、李侍尧等贤臣受黜，国势更加江河日下。嘉庆朝立奏响了乾隆封建极盛之世没落的终曲。
